Excerpt: Only a Breath Apart by Katie McGarry

OnlyABreathApart_Tour_Banner.jpgKatie McGarry has been one of my favourite YA authors for quite a while now, which makes me even more excited to be a part of her blog tour for her latest release, Only a Breath Apart!

You may remember when I was involved in the cover reveal for this book back in June last year, which I was absolutely thrilled about, especially when I saw how stunning the cover actually was.

I am currently reading this (along with a million other things as per) and I think I am about 40% of my way through so far on my Kindle and I can definitely say it is right up there with the best. Think childhood friendships coming back together, controlling parents, psychics with a touch of magic, and whatever comes after the 40% mark. Told through the alternating viewpoints of Jesse and Scarlett, this is written in my favourite style for YA contemporary romance. I’ll make sure to do a review when I finish because it is one I have a feeling I will just have to share.

For now, though, I have a little excerpt and a bit about the book that I can share with you to hopefully tempt you into buying as well. There is also a link to a giveaway at the bottom of this post for the chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card – you could spend some of it on this book!

    McGarry_ONLY A BREATH APART_cover.jpgABOUT ONLY A BREATH APART:

They say your destiny is carved in stone. But some destinies are meant to be broken.

The only curse Jesse Lachlin believes in is his grandmother’s will: in order to inherit his family farm he must win the approval of his childhood best friend, the girl he froze out his freshman year.

A fortuneteller tells Scarlett she’s psychic, but what is real is Scarlett’s father’s controlling attitude and the dark secrets at home. She may be able to escape, but only if she can rely on the one boy who broke her heart.

Each midnight meeting pushes Jesse and Scarlett to confront their secrets and their feelings, but as love blooms, the curse rears its ugly head…

    OnlyaBreathApart_Tour_teaser1.jpgEXCERPT

    SCARLETT

“I thought you said you were meeting Camilla.”

I jump at the sound of Dad’s voice and spin in his direction. “I am.”

Dad studies me, and I hide my hands behind my back to conceal the slight quiver that could announce my guilt. when I left him, he was in good spirits, but his mood can quickly shift. There are two patched up holes in my bedroom that can testify to this. Dad replaced the drywall, covered it with fresh pain, but the perfection can’t take away from the memory of the way my heart pounded through my chest as he drove his fist through the wall.

He inclines his head towards the booth of balloon animals. “Camila appears to be working.”

“She’s getting off soon,” I say too fast as I bite back the need to ask why he didn’t go home like he said he was.

“Why did you leave us if she’s still working? You said Camila would be done by five-thirty.” Read more

    About the Book

Jordan Weston is good-looking, mysterious, and sexually uninhibited, but his life is more like the name of his bar – Just an Illusion. His cousins are the bad boys of Bastards and Dangerous, but their fame hasn’t made everything rainbows and sunshine for him. He’s haunted, flawed, and the sole survivor of a homicide that wiped out his immediate family.

Allie Baker, the most recent hire at the bar, can see through Jordan’s façade. She knows he’s everything she doesn’t need, but she’s beginning to crave his cocky attitude and the way he looks at her. The more she tries to stay away from him, the more she wants to get to know him.

Jordan knows falling for an employee is a bad idea, but Allie pushes buttons he never realized he had. Even though Allie desperately needs her job, she soon decides being with Jordan is more important. Will they be able to compromise, or will she let her chance at love pass her by for the sake of a paycheck?

    Thoughts on the synopsis

THIS SOUNDS SO GOOD. I am pretty excited to read this new release when it comes out (or maybe a cheeky little ARC…), although I have to say the blurb doesn’t leave too much to the imagination. We already know his entire back story and the fact that Allie is short on cash so needs this job, and I think we all know she isn’t going to ‘let her chance at love pass her by’ at the end of the book. Despite being able to predict the entire storyline from those three paragraphs, I’ll still definitely be reading this one. I haven’t read anything by D. Kelly before so I am looking forward to seeing her writing style.

COVER REVEAL: Love Sincerely Yours by Sara Ney and Meghan Quinn

Love Sincerely Yours by Sara Ney and Meghan Quinn
    Release date: 9th October
A sexy, smart, and heart-swooning romance about a girl who has nothing to lose when it comes to flirting with her boss.
This seductive contemporary romance from bestselling authors Sara Ney and Meghan Quinn will keep you on the edge of your seat as you fall in love with the first novel from this dynamic due releasing October 9th.

(And woah, talk about tall, dark and handsome. He is exactly what my dad aptly calls The Jaw.)

    Synopsis

Dear Mister… **strike out** no, too formal.

Hey there sweet cheeks **strike out** no, too forward.

    To whom it may concern,

Full disclosure; before we move forward with this email, I would like it to be known that I have consumed an adequate amount of alcoholic beverages to intoxicate myself tonight. Three margaritas, two shots, and one beer – because it was free.

I think it’s important to be open and honest with your co-workers, don’t you?

So here I am, being honest. Drunk but honest. Or just drunk with lust? You decide.

I like you so much it’s clouding my judgement and making me do things I never would sober. Like write this letter.

I have a hopeless, foolish, schoolgirl crush on you when you are the last person on earth I should be falling for. Did you know people around the office call you a sadist? An egomaniac. An insensitive, arrogant prick. Your bark is worse than your bite, and you don’t scare me. The fact is, I’d love that bite of yours to nip at my bare skin while we’re both wearing nothing but sheets.

For once I want you to look at me as more than one of your employees.

And as long as we’re being honest, that navy blue suit you wear? With the crisp white shirt? It really makes me want to loosen your tie and show you who’s boss.

    Love,

    Sincerely,

    Yours.

    Initial Impression

A forbidden romance in the workplace with an arrogant annoying boss (I assume)? YES PLEASE.

I am thinking that maybe the protagonist writes this letter drunk and then accidentally sends it to her boss, or maybe it just seems like a good idea at the time only to think OH SHIT when she wakes up the next day with a raging hangover and massive regrets (don’t we all know that old chestnut). Either way, I love the synopsis for this, and the rather delightful cover just as much!

    About the Authors

Sara Ney is the USA Today Bestselling Author of the How to Date a Douchebag series, and is best known for her sexy, laugh-out-loud New Adult romances. Among her favourite vices, she includes: iced lattes, historical architecture and well-placed sarcasm. She lives colourfully, collects vintage books, arts, loves flea markets, and fancies herself British.

She lives with her husband, children, and her ridiculously large dog.

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.

Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep mal voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing…enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

Now you can fin the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four-legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

COVER REVEAL: Only A Breath Apart by Katie McGarry

I am SO excited to be involved in my very first cover reveal on my blog today in connection Ink Slinger PR and the amazing YA author, Katie McGarry. Something about doing a cover reveal makes me very much like a ~proper~ book blogger. Like I have really made it now.

It makes it even more exciting that it is for an author like Katie who I absolutely adore! Say You’ll Remember Me is the last book of hers that I read, and it is definitely one of my favourites ever. Not only does she write in my favourite genre, YA romance, but her writing is also up there with the best. Her more recent book covers are definitely nicer than the older ones, but that often happens with authors when budgets get bigger I suppose.

And then we have ONLY A BREATH APART. It is just SO PRETTY. Look at those colours, the font, the composition. Then imagine holding the hardback in your hands. Amazing.

Now, a little bit about the book itself.

Jesse dreams of working the land that’s been in his family forever. But he’s cursed to lose everything he loves the most.

Scarlett is desperate to escape her “charmed” life. But leaving a small town is easier said than done.

Despite their history of heartbreak, when Jesse sees a way they can work together to each get what they want, Scarlett can’t say no. Each midnight meeting between Jesse and Scarlett will push them to confront their secrets and their feelings for each other.

Swoon. Scarlett seems like a character I will relate to a lot, coming from a small town myself and my own fair share of dramas, just like the next person. As painful as it is to be waiting till NEXT YEAR for this book, I am positive it will be worth the wait.
Something else which every book lover should know – and if you dont, I’m about to tell you – is the importance of pre-ordering books before their release date.
It not only tells the publisher and booksellers how popular the book is going to be, it also therefore allows for a bigger print run. The pre-order numbers represent the potential that the book has for its success. Pre-orders also count for initial first-week sales (as far as I know) helping the book achieve a space in bestseller lists. Retailers may increase their initial orders when they see pre-order sales, and we are all for making authors more money I am sure!! Writing a book is such a time-consuming activity, and the authors we love deserve to get some appreciation for their hard work. There is really no better way to support your favourite authors than by pre-ordering their books, so here are some links we you can pre-order Only a Breath Apart.
